Position Summary

Under general supervision, designs, configures, implements and supports local- and wide-area telecommunication networks, internet, satellite and other telecommunications media to ensure the safe, secure, reliable, and efficient transmission of corporate data compatible with system capabilities and existing technologies and services.


  • Consults with customers regarding network, connectivity and data/video communication needs and requirements; analyzes user communication needs and equipment and staffing requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints, existing technology, systems capabilities, and operating objectives standards, practices and procedures.
  • Tests, evaluates, configures and installs hubs, networks, routers, switches and related systems hardware to improve network reliability and performance.
  • Configures, installs/removes and monitors system security hardware, software and related devices such as firewalls and intrusion prevention systems; reviews related activity logs.
  • Connects, disconnects and upgrades frame-relay circuits and point-to-point T1/T3 connections; configures Channel Service Units (CSU) and Data Service Units (DSU); monitors circuit utilization for performance level, problems and errors; reports problems to service provider for resolution.
  • Designs, implements and monitors VPN/Remote access systems; troubleshoots and resolves problems on Site-to-Site and remote access VPN connections.
  • Monitors, analyzes and manages network traffic and other conditions to achieve optimal performance and uptime; analyzes data to minimize network congestion.
  • Evaluates and recommends software, tools and utilities to aid in automated monitoring and management of network performance; develops and maintains network documentation and reference tools.
  • Troubleshoots, evaluates, maintains, upgrades and provides solutions for data communications software and hardware problems.
  • Upholds the Crawford Code of Business Conduct at all times.
  • Participates in special projects or performs duties in other areas as requested.


  • Completion of a college or university degree in information systems or related field and 7 years progressively responsible experience in networking and internetworking.
  • 5 years of experience in providing network technical support for a large scale frame relay network or an equivalent combination of training and experience that would produce the following knowledge, abilities and skills.
  • Preferably with Checkpoint Certified Systems Engineer (CCSE), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) preferred.
  • Network architectures and theory and principles of network design and integration, including typologies and protocols.
  • Principles, methods and techniques for layout, installation, configuration, integration and operation of network systems, equipment and devices.
  • Methods and techniques for performing connectivity testing and network analysis and trouble-shooting, including use of diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Systems programming and applications development tools and methods.
  • Internet/intranet technologies and design concepts and techniques, including firewall configuration and applicable programming languages.
  • Perform business and functional requirements analysis and reach sound, logical conclusions regarding user needs and requirements.
  • Develop and maintain effective customer-focused service processes with corporate managers and end users.
  • Configure, maintain and manage the operations of a complex LAN/WAN to achieve optimal technical performance and user support.
  • Troubleshoot network hardware and software and connectivity issues to resolve problems promptly.
