Position Summary

We are currently seeking a Cargo Claims Adjuster to join our Commercial Transportation Unit. The Adjuster will be responsible for the analysis, investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and resolution of minimal to moderately complex claims requiring thorough investigations including telephone contacts with the involved parties, technical expertise, and complex analysis. Claim assignments involve Cargo/freight and property damage assignments.

 

The adjuster should be able to adjust Cargo claims pertaining to Motor Truck Cargo Legal Liability coverage for transportation of freight that may involve importing, exporting, freight brokers and freight forwarders that include domestic and international transportation and familiar with the Carmack Amendment and COGSA regulations.   

  • This position is responsible for interpreting insurance contracts and determine policy coverage as applicable to the specific loss. Investigates claims to determine coverage liability and damages.
  • Familiarity with Standard Cargo forms.
  • Working knowledge of multi-state claim handling regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate claims for purposes of setting reserves and making appropriate payment.
  • Document all claims activity within our CMS system.
  • Settle a claim according to policy terms.
  • Manage Third Party Vendors.
  • Ability to function independently as well as in an environment of teamwork and collaboration. Must be able to work with tow facilities and a variety of clients requesting specific tasks.
  • Must be familiar with Wrecker invoicing and the function of tow equipment.
  • Provide strong customer service skills.
  • Makes decisions in a timely manner.
  • Strong written/reporting and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Meet all quality standards and expectations per Best Practices.
  • Computer Knowledge.
  • Professional claims handling experience. 2+ years of Cargo and transportation claims handling.
  • State adjuster licenses needed.

Responsibilities

  • Examines claims forms, policies and endorsements, client instructions and other records to determine coverages.
  • Conducts on-site investigations of claims by interviewing claimants and witnesses, obtaining official reports, by inspecting physical damage, and by comparing claim information with evidence.
  • Sets loss reserves.
  • Prepares reports by collecting and summarizing information required by client, local, state and federal government and by Crawford.
  • Settles claims by determining insurance carrier’s liability, client’s instructions and authority levels required by obtaining demands and making offers to claimants, issuing settlement checks, making filings with regulatory agencies, disposing of salvage, pursuing subrogation when appropriate.
  • Controls claims costs.
  • Recommends litigation when appropriate.
  • Presents evidence at legal proceedings, producing reports and other documents as evidence.
  • Maintains expected case load.
  • Maintains company reputation and integrity of insurance products by complying with federal and state regulations and service standards.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education.
  • Makes sales calls by calling on local businesses to solicit new business or to maintain existing clients.
  • May assist and mentor junior adjusters with claims handling.
  • Upholds the Crawford Code of Business Conduct at all times.
  • Participates in special projects or performs duties in other areas as requested.

Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience as a claims adjuster or must have completed Crawford specified adjuster training if no experience.
  • Extensive, substantive experience as a Claims Adjuster; preferred a minimum of 4 years prior claims experience.
  • Must be licensed as required by state and local jurisdictions.
  • Outside adjusters must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical ability.
